North Coast Opportunities (NCO), a Community Action Agency serving seven Northern California counties, was recently awarded a new, three-year RSVP grant to expand services to Sonoma County. Joan Reynolds, currently a Program Coordinator with the NCO Volunteer Network, will be leading the new project. The project will be based at United Way of the Wine Country’s offices, located at 975 Corporate Center Parkway, Suite 160, in Santa Rosa.
The RSVP project in Sonoma County will leverage the experience and skills of senior volunteers to serve with local non-profits, including the Earn It, Keep It, Save It and Schools of Hope programs, both in partnership with United Way of the Wine Country. Earn It, Keep It, Save It trains local volunteers to assist low-income families with free tax preparation. Schools of Hope provides volunteer tutors in local schools to help kindergarten through third grade students learn to read. The program will also recruit senior volunteers for Big Brothers, Big Sisters to be mentors to young people needing another caring adult in their life. Volunteers will also be needed to teach fall prevention education through Sonoma County’s Area Agency on Aging’s A Matter of Balance Program in local senior centers and community centers.
