Saturday, May 4th, 2019 marks the 13th year that hundreds of non-profit supporters take over downtown Ukiah in the annual Human Race! The Mendo Human Race, coordinated by North Coast Opportunities, Inc., is part of a nationwide community 5K run and walk composed of teams raising funds for local non-profit organizations. In many areas, individuals and families rely heavily on local non-profit organizations to provide much needed community programs and resources. Non-profit organizations, are often funded directly by grants and donations, without a guarantee of funding from year to year. The Mendo Human Race allows non-profit organizations and community groups to fundraise, collecting supporters (and runners or walkers) along the way.
There are dozens of Mendocino County non-profit organizations that can use your support. Some of the organizations who have teams for this weekend’s race include: Mendo Shelter Pet Rescue, Adventist Health: Howard Memorial and Ukiah Valley, Radiant Yoga: Kids Program, Yokayo Elementary School PTA, DJ Pomilia Memorial Fund, Tapestry Family Services and Redwood Community Services. How to support a non-profit organization and participate? It’s as easy as READY, SET, GO!
READY: Pick one of the organizations from the list of those registered here: https://runsignup.com/RaceGroups/71850
SET: Register, pay the registration fee and decide if you and your teammates want to run or walk (KIDS ARE WELCOME). Raise more funds from friends and relatives to donate to your favorite non-profit too. DON’T FORGET to submit the funds you have raised at Bank Night at NCO’s main office on Wednesday, May 1st from 3-6pm (NCO main office is located at 413 North State St. Ukiah).
GO: Join your team and dozens of others at the starting line at Alex Thomas Plaza on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 at 9:00 am.
Categories to participate include the 5k adult and child walk, 5K adult and child run, and the “Kids Fun Run”. Each child and adult runner must submit $35 to participate in the race. Walkers can participate for free, (but must sign a waiver to walk). Runners competing will receive awards. Teams and individuals who raise the most funds can also win prizes, such as gift certificates from Ukiah Valley Athletic Club, Slam Dunk Pizza and more. All participants who meet the minimum $25 donation receive a commemorative T-shirt, water bottle, and meal provided by Slam Dunk Pizza.
The community is invited to join in the fun! Individuals and teams can check in as early as 8am on race day! Entertainment after the race will be provided by DJ Jose Cervantes from the Perkins St. Lounge, and many community organizations will be represented with booths and games at the finish line.
