Funded by the United Way of the Wine Country Earn It! Keep It! Save It! program, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $79,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
VITA volunteers help hardworking families receive the tax refunds they deserve by volunteering for the Earn It! Keep It! $ave It! program. In 2019, volunteers helped bring almost a million dollars in refunds back to Mendocino and Lake Counties. Many local families can't afford the cost of tax preparation. They may not know that they qualify for Earned Income Tax credits and other credits for low-income households. Volunteers can maximize their tax refunds, which makes families very grateful.
VITA Volunteers serve throughout Mendocino and Lake County - preparing tax returns and greeting clients. No experience is necessary and free tax preparation training is provided. NCO trains volunteers to provide this service during tax season out of our Ukiah offices.
This program runs from February to April.
